What is a "child of Persephone?"

A child of Persephone, as my aunt described, is someone with one foot in this world and one in the other. A child -- or priestess -- of Persephone celebrates life by honouring the dead. Whether you believe in an afterlife or reincarnation or simply that our bodies feed the earth, there is a cycle to life and death that is told in her myth as both agrarian Goddess of Spring and cthonic Queen of the Underworld.

Known by many names, she is the mediator between the worlds of the living and the dead. She brings joy and beauty to both, even in heartbreak. To be her priestess means celebrating both the rites of Spring and of Death. In my case, seeing the dead as clearly as the living makes me her child, but working toward being a death doula, to guide the dying, is what makes me her priestess.

To become a dedicant of Persephone, or even her priest/ess, doesn't require you to see the dead, nor does it require any secret Eleusinian mysteries. Simply honour her at the Spring and Autumn equinox. Leave her offerings of seed fruits and flowers, honey cakes, and beeswax candles. Look deep into the scrying glass and simply allow grief transport and transform you. Let her guide you on a journey between the two worlds.
